What Are Cannabis Consumption Lounges?

Cannabis consumption lounges are approved to start opening in California.1 But what are consumption lounges, and how do they work?

What Are Cannabis Consumption Lounges?

Cannabis consumption lounges are similar to bars, but for cannabis instead of alcohol. They’re a place where people 21 and older can go to sit and consume cannabis indoors socially. These lounges are popular in other places of the world, but they are a new development for the U.S.

Like bars with alcohol, consumption lounges require you only to consume cannabis that you purchase inside the lounge or attached dispensary. It is against the law to bring your own cannabis to consume even if it's still sealed.

Approval and Legality

Each city or county gets to vote to approve cannabis consumption lounges, therefore, cannabis consumption lounges have been approved and are legal in only certain parts of California.2 As of now, cities like West Hollywood and San Francisco have taken the lead in permitting these lounges. Other cities are gradually considering and implementing regulations to allow them to do so.

It’s important to note that even if it is legal to consume cannabis in a location such as this, driving under the influence of cannabis is always against the law and is dangerous to yourself and those around you. The effects of consuming cannabis can take several hours to wear off, so just like Ubering home from a bar, adults over the age of 21 consuming cannabis should plan a sober ride home after visiting a consumption lounge.

The Future of Consumption Lounges

The concept of consumption lounges in California is so new that a lot is bound to change over the years. While the culture and rules of consumption lounges are likely to change, your health and safety should be the top priority.
