Sober Environments to Find Queer Community

If you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a big way you can support your mental health is by surrounding yourself with other members of your community. Having friends who are LGBTQ+ and can relate to who you are and the struggles you face can provide safety, solitude, and a support system that is important for mental health and wellness.

If you’re in search of this community, it can sometimes feel hard to find it in places that aren’t centered around substance use. Historically, many individuals within the LGBTQ+ community have turned to bars or clubs to find a queer community. While these venues continue to serve as an important gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community, if you are under 21, sober, or simply prefer to meet people elsewhere, you might be wondering where else you can connect with the queer community. Luckily, there are many ways to find a queer community that doesn’t involve going to a bar or a club. Keep reading for a list of sober environments where you can find queer community:

  • Check out events or volunteer at your local LGBTQ+ center
    • Many cities have community centers that host free events, support groups, and activities for LGBTQ+ individuals of all ages. Volunteering at one of these centers is also a great way to give back to the community and make LGBTQ+ friends.

  • Visit LGBTQ+-owned businesses
    • Queer-owned and operated businesses are a great place to find community!  Many businesses will host events or are known gathering spots for the community. You’ll also give back to the LGBTQ+ community by shopping at a queer-owned business. • Join (or create) an LGBTQ+ club or group
    • Many schools have a Genders & Sexualities Alliance (GSA) club or something similar. Joining a GSA is a great way to make queer friends and be involved in queer community. And if your school doesn’t have a GSA, you can start one; learn more here! Websites like Meetup.com also have various groups for LGBTQ+ interests, such as book clubs, hiking groups, and game nights that are often held in sober environments.
  • Join a queer sports team or hobby group
    • Many cities have LGBTQ+ sports leagues that provide a fun, active, and sober way to meet people. Search for a queer sports team near you. Or, if sports aren’t your speed, try a hobby like joining a gay men’s chorus or a queer crafting group.

  • Engage in social media and online communities
    • Meet people from around the world by joining online forums, Facebook groups, or Discord servers focused on LGBTQ+ topics and interests.

Finding a supportive LGBTQ+ community is not only possible but essential for mental health and well-being. It can provide you with a sense of belonging, support and understanding, and an opportunity for shared experiences. Don’t hesitate to reach out and seek out spaces where you truly feel at home. Your journey to finding community can be a rewarding one, filled with connection and empowerment.
